HEADTEACHER BANNED AFTER ALTERING TERM DATES FOR CRUISE
Joy Ballard, a former headteacher at Ryde Academy on the Isle of Wight, has been banned from teaching in England following a tribunal finding that she deliberately changed school term dates to accommodate a personal cruise holiday. The Teaching Regulation Agency panel also found that Mrs Ballard used school funds to purchase a Peugeot car for personal use, along with a karaoke machine, two televisions and camping equipment during her time at the school. The tribunal concluded that Mrs Ballard acted knowingly and dishonestly for personal benefit. Mrs Ballard, who previously appeared on Channel 4 show Educating Cardiff and won a Pearson Teaching Award, admitted to not being a "rule follower" and stated she aimed to benefit pupils.
The panel deemed Mrs Ballard's conduct unacceptable and likely to bring the teaching profession into disrepute. Mrs Ballard conceded she would not use the school car for personal reasons again, though the tribunal had already established she used it for a personal trip to France. The evidence presented to the panel established a pattern of using institutional resources for private purposes without appropriate authorisation or accountability.
Mrs Ballard is now prohibited from teaching in any educational setting in England. She may apply to have the prohibition order lifted in June 2028, according to the tribunal's determination. The case represents a formal finding of misconduct by the regulatory body responsible for standards in the teaching profession.
