FRI 03 JUL 2026 CRIME

Kian Bateman was jailed after driving a car into Shelley Davies and her partner. Davies died in hospital three weeks after the collision. Bateman was high on nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, at the time of the incident. The court heard that Bateman used the vehicle as a weapon.

Davies was a mother of three. She and her partner were struck by the car in an attack that left her with injuries from which she did not recover. The incident resulted in her death, which occurred in hospital during the three-week period following the collision. Nitrous oxide use has been a growing concern among young people in the United Kingdom, with the drug available in cartridges used for culinary purposes.

Bateman received a custodial sentence for his role in Davies's death. The case highlights the dangers of driving under the influence of drugs and the use of vehicles as weapons. The prosecution secured a conviction based on evidence presented during the trial. Davies's family was affected by the loss of a relative in circumstances involving both substance use and deliberate vehicle use as a means of causing harm.
