FARRELL LEAVES DOOR OPEN FOR LOWE 2027 WORLD CUP RETURN

FRI 03 JUL 2026 FOOTBALL

Andy Farrell, head coach of Ireland, stated that James Lowe is unlikely to be selected for Ireland whilst the former Leinster wing plays in Japan. Farrell did not, however, completely rule out the possibility of Lowe being chosen for the 2027 Rugby World Cup. Lowe departed Irish rugby to take up a position in the Japanese league.

The wing previously played for Leinster before moving to Japan. Farrell's comments suggest that playing outside the Irish domestic and European competitions presents a significant barrier to selection under his current approach. The decision reflects the coach's stated preference for players competing at the highest levels of the Northern Hemisphere game.

Farrell's stance leaves open the possibility that circumstances could change by the time of the 2027 World Cup. The tournament remains four years away, providing potential scope for reconsideration of Lowe's eligibility status. No confirmation of Lowe's future involvement with the Ireland squad has been announced.
