SOUTHERN WATER IMPOSES HOSEPIPE BAN FOR HAMPSHIRE AND ISLE OF WIGHT

FRI 03 JUL 2026 INTERNATIONAL

Southern Water has introduced a hosepipe ban affecting approximately one million customers across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight from 10 July. The restriction represents the second consecutive year the supplier has implemented such measures. The company has advised households to cease hosepipe use immediately to reduce pressure on the water network. Officials expect the ban to remain in place until autumn unless the United Kingdom receives substantial and sustained rainfall.

The ban follows record temperatures that reached 37 degrees Celsius, which depleted water supplies across the region. The River Test, which provides water to most people in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, has fallen to critically low levels. Tania Flasck, director of water operations, stated to the BBC that measured water flow in June had dropped "a lot, a lot further and faster" than anticipated by predictive models. A separate hosepipe ban imposed by South East Water on customers in Kent remains in force.

The restrictions form part of a wider response to the recent heatwave that affected western Europe. Recorded data indicated over 1,300 excess deaths linked to the hot spell across the continent, and at least seven people drowned in UK open waters. Temperature records were broken on three consecutive days, with conditions reaching particularly severe levels in urban centres including London and Paris. Weather forecasters have indicated that another warm weather system could affect the United Kingdom over the coming weekend and into the following week.
