HARRY POTTER FANS WARNED OFF TRACKS AT GLENFINNAN VIADUCT

FRI 03 JUL 2026

Authorities have issued a warning to visitors at the Glenfinnan Viaduct in Scotland after a surge in people trespassing on railway lines to photograph the Jacobite Steam Train, which featured in the Harry Potter films. Neil Cook, Network Rail Scotland's route crime manager, stated that trains can approach from either direction, are quieter than expected and cannot stop quickly. Chief Superintendent Lorna McEwan of the British Transport Police said trespassing on the tracks risks serious injury and causes major disruption to passengers and freight across the network. Trespassing on railway property is a criminal offence, and those caught can be fined and prosecuted.

Emily Bryce, operations manager for the National Trust for Scotland at Glenfinnan, reported that over 600,000 people visit the site annually. According to Ms Bryce, some visitors leave marked paths in attempts to reach the railway, creating safety risks and damaging the surrounding landscape. The viaduct, built in the 19th century, also carries ScotRail services in addition to the heritage steam train. VisitScotland has urged visitors to use designated viewpoints and remain on marked paths to protect both themselves and the historic site.

The British Transport Police have requested that anyone witnessing trespass incidents on the railway contact them by texting 61016 or calling 999 in emergencies. Network Rail and the National Trust for Scotland have emphasised that designated viewing areas are available for safe observation of the trains crossing the viaduct. Both organisations have stressed that taking selfies is not worth the risk of serious injury or death.
