SEVEN PRO-PALESTINE PROTESTERS CONVICTED OVER GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE BLOCKADE

FRI 03 JUL 2026 MIDDLE EAST

A jury in San Francisco convicted seven protesters of misdemeanour charges following their blockade of the Golden Gate Bridge during an anti-war demonstration in April 2024. The jury deliberated for seven days before reaching verdicts on six misdemeanour counts per defendant, including false imprisonment and obstruction of thoroughfare. One defendant, Sara Cantor, was additionally convicted of refusing to disperse. The jury remained deadlocked on the most serious charge of felony conspiracy, which carried a potential sentence of 15 years in prison, and could not reach agreement on a misdemeanour trespassing charge.

The prosecution argued that the demonstration blocked traffic for more than four hours, trapping motorists on the bridge. San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins stated in 2024 that the blockade "caused a level of safety risk, including extreme threats to the health and welfare of those trapped, that we as a society cannot ignore or allow." Defence attorneys presented an alternative account during trial, though the full details of their arguments were not detailed in available reports. Six protesters face a maximum sentence of five years in county jail; Cantor faces five-and-a-half years.

Sentencing is scheduled for 21 August. Public defender Nuha Abusamra, representing one defendant, said the outcome "remains a victory," adding that "we do not fight solely to win. We fight for the resistance." It remains unclear whether the prosecution will seek a retrial on the deadlocked felony conspiracy and misdemeanour trespassing charges.
