NASA RELEASES PATRIOTIC-COLOURED SPACE IMAGES FOR US 250TH ANNIVERSARY

FRI 03 JUL 2026 SPACE

NASA released four images of space rendered in red, white, and blue to mark the 250th anniversary of the United States. The images were created using observations from the Chandra X-ray Observatory and combine data from multiple telescopes. The collection showcases astronomical phenomena ranging from the remnants of stellar explosions to active star-forming regions.

The first image depicts Cassiopeia A, the debris from a supernova, combining X-ray data from Chandra with infrared observations from the James Webb Space Telescope. Chandra's observations revealed the blast wave from the explosion and elements including iron, calcium, and oxygen scattered through the debris. A second image shows NGC 3603, a nebula in the Milky Way containing one of the galaxy's largest young star clusters, with Chandra X-ray data highlighting newly formed stars alongside optical and infrared data from the Hubble Space Telescope. The third image presents Messier 94, a spiral galaxy, blending Chandra X-ray observations at multiple wavelengths with visible light data captured by ground-based telescopes.

NASA stated that the collection demonstrates the capabilities of space-based observatories to reveal the universe's structure and dynamics. The images illustrate how combining data across different wavelengths—from X-rays to visible light—provides comprehensive views of cosmic objects. The release coincided with broader celebrations of the American space programme's contributions to astronomical science.
