JAPAN FEDERATION URGED TO RECRUIT POSTECOGLOU

FRI 03 JUL 2026 BOXING

Japan's football federation should pursue Ange Postecoglou as head coach following the national team's elimination from the World Cup, according to analysis of the manager's track record. Japan lost to Brazil in the last-32 match, extending their record to five consecutive knockout-stage defeats in the tournament. Postecoglou, who recently managed Tottenham Hotspur, is expected to be in demand among national teams this summer. His managerial approach and mentality are viewed as assets that could help Japan progress beyond their current level in international football.

Postecoglou spent three-and-a-half years as manager of Yokohama F. Marinos, where he secured the J.League championship in his second season—the club's first title in 15 years. He has also managed in Scotland, though that role is considered less significant than his work in Japan. South Korea's football association has also advertised a vacant head coach position and invited applications. Scotland have been linked with Postecoglou, though wage demands have reportedly presented obstacles to that move.

Japan's football federation is positioned to offer what observers describe as an attractive opportunity. The nation's talent pool and potential ceiling for development are characterised as superior to other available posts. Postecoglou's experience in the Japanese league and his success at club level there create familiarity with the football environment. Securing his signature on a lengthy contract would require the federation to act quickly before rival nations formalise their own managerial appointments.
