WOMAN JAILED FOR CANCER FRAUD AT CHILDREN'S CHARITY
Claire Alderton has been jailed for two years after lying to her employer that she had been diagnosed with cancer. Alderton stopped attending work at George's Rockstars, a children's charity, whilst making the false claim. She had obtained her position at the organisation using fake references. A court heard that Alderton's lies were described as "truly abhorrent".
George's Rockstars was established following the death of the founder's son from leukaemia. The charity provides support and activities for children affected by cancer and their families. Alderton's deception therefore occurred within an organisation directly connected to the disease she falsely claimed to have contracted. Her actions constituted fraud against the charity.
The court's sentencing of Alderton to a two-year custodial term reflects the severity of the offence. Her use of fabricated references to secure employment at the charity compounded the dishonesty involved in the case. The case has concluded with her conviction and imprisonment.
