PIZZA DELIVERY DRIVER GIVEN SUSPENDED SENTENCE AFTER FATAL COLLISION

THU 02 JUL 2026 CRIME

Rosie Hanson, a delivery driver aged 21, received a 16-month prison term, suspended for two years, after a collision that killed 27-year-old Ryan Phillips in January 2024. Hanson was driving at 60 mph whilst delivering a pizza when the collision occurred. Phillips was struck and killed in the incident. The suspended sentence means Hanson will not serve time in prison unless she breaches the conditions of her suspension during the two-year period.

The case involved a delivery driver travelling at speeds significantly above appropriate limits for the circumstances in which the collision took place. Phillips's family issued a statement following the sentencing. A person close to Phillips stated: "Losing Ryan has ruined my life. I intended to spend the rest of my life with him." The collision took place in January 2024, and the sentencing followed a legal process examining the circumstances and Hanson's culpability.

The sentence reflects a judicial decision to suspend the custodial term rather than impose immediate imprisonment. Hanson will remain subject to the conditions of her suspension for the two-year period. The case raises questions about the balance between accountability and rehabilitation in cases involving fatal collisions caused by driving at excessive speed.
