JODAR BEATS CARRENÒ BUSTA AT WIMBLEDON AFTER MATCH RESUMPTION

THU 02 JUL 2026 TENNIS

Rafael Jodar defeated Pablo Carrenño Busta 3-6, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 at Wimbledon in a match resumed after being held over from the previous evening due to insufficient light. The 19-year-old Spanish player had trailed two sets to one when play stopped but recovered to advance to the third round. Jodar will face Shintaro Mochizuki of Japan next, with the prospect of meeting defending champion Jannik Sinner in the fourth round. The teenager said he believed in his ability to return despite the setback and adapted successfully to the different conditions the following morning.

Jodar is competing at Wimbledon for the first time and playing his debut grass-court event. He reached the quarter-finals at Roland Garros last month and has emerged as a significant prospect this season. The player acknowledged the adjustment required when moving to grass but expressed confidence after a week of preparation at Wimbledon before the tournament began. He noted that playing on clay earlier in the season had been easier since he had competed on clay courts as a younger player.

Elsewhere in the men's draw, second seed Alexander Zverev defeated Valentin Royer of France 6-1, 6-3, 7-6 (3) in his match. Fifth seed Alex de Minaur beat Adrian Mannarino of France 6-3, 6-2, 6-2, whilst sixth seed Taylor Fritz defeated fellow American Patrick Kipson 6-2, 6-2, 7-5. With fourth seed Ben Shelton no longer in De Minaur's section of the draw, the Australian player's path through the tournament has theoretically become more favourable.
