LEONARD RETURNS TO RAPTORS IN NBA FREE AGENCY OVERHAUL
The Los Angeles Clippers traded Kawhi Leonard to the Toronto Raptors in exchange for Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick and draft picks, marking a reunion between the 2019 Finals MVP and the franchise he led to the championship that year. The trade occurred within the opening 48 hours of 2026 NBA free agency, which saw significant player movement across the league. LeBron James departed the Los Angeles Lakers, Giannis Antetokounmpo joined the Miami Heat, and Jaylen Brown left the Boston Celtics. LaMelo Ball moved to the Minnesota Timberwolves whilst Ja Morant signed with the Portland Trail Blazers.
The Raptors constructed the trade around Leonard's historical output in the 2019 playoffs, when he averaged 30.5 points on 49/38/88 shooting splits, 9.1 rebounds and 3.9 assists across four playoff rounds. Leonard, now 35, commanded an annual salary of $50 million in the agreement. The Lakers invested $70 million in salary cap space during free agency, with much of that directed towards Walker Kessler. Leonard's durability remains a consideration given previous injuries to his right leg, though observers noted his two-way defensive capabilities could provide Toronto with competitive advantage over previous roster construction.
The free agency period produced what some described as storybook outcomes, with Leonard's return to Toronto and James's departure from Los Angeles both occurring within days of one another. Toronto's front office prioritised Leonard's scoring ability and two-way play over alternative roster options, accepting the financial and health-related risks involved. The Lakers' allocation of salary cap space towards Kessler represented a distinct strategic direction following James's exit from the franchise.
