TOTTENHAM SET TO BREAK TRANSFER RECORD AGAIN WITH £237M SUMMER SPEND

THU 02 JUL 2026 FOOTBALL

Tottenham are preparing to exceed their previous single-season transfer spending record for the second time in days. The club completed a £52m acquisition of Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton and signed Mateus Fernandes from West Ham for a club-record £85m on Thursday. Tottenham have also agreed a deal with Newcastle United for Sandro Tonali worth up to £100m, taking their summer outlay to £237m. Their previous highest seasonal spending stood at £235.8m during the 2023-24 campaign.

The spending represents a significant shift in Tottenham's transfer strategy following the appointment of Peter Charrington as chairman, who replaced Daniel Levy after nearly 25 years in the executive chairman role. Charrington stated in May that the club "recognised that something seismic had to change" and that "what has been put in motion is real, and it marks a genuine break from what had come before." The new spending rules, higher revenues, owner cash injections and increased wage budgets have enabled Tottenham to pursue signings decisively and early in the transfer window. Tottenham have finished 17th—one place above the relegation zone—in each of the past two seasons.

The signings represent victories over rival clubs in the transfer market. Sandro Tonali was a primary midfield target for Arsenal, the reigning Premier League champions, though the London club found Newcastle's asking price prohibitive. Tottenham also secured Mateus Fernandes ahead of interest from Manchester United. The club's hierarchy has indicated further spending of up to £250m remains possible this summer.
