CHARITY BACKS TRAINING COURSES FOR RABBIT OWNERS
A charity has endorsed bunny courses for new rabbit owners following calls from a politician for mandatory training before ownership. Mike Hedges stated that people should be restricted from becoming rabbit owners until they understand the animals' needs. The courses aim to educate prospective owners on proper rabbit care and welfare requirements.
The charity's backing reflects growing concern about rabbit welfare standards among private owners. Hedges had previously argued that ownership restrictions should apply to those lacking knowledge of rabbit behaviour and husbandry. Training programmes would cover topics including housing, diet, socialisation and health care specific to rabbits. The proposal recognises that rabbits have complex requirements often misunderstood by first-time owners.
The endorsement represents a significant shift towards formalising education for small animal ownership. Animal welfare organisations have long highlighted issues arising from inadequate owner knowledge. Hedges' position suggests momentum building behind mandatory or strongly encouraged training schemes. The courses could become a model for addressing welfare concerns across other domestic animal categories.
