JAMIE OSBORNE SHIFTS TO LEFT WING FOR IRELAND AGAINST AUSTRALIA

THU 02 JUL 2026 RUGBY

Jamie Osborne has been selected for Ireland's Test against Australia in Sydney on Saturday, but in a position change that marks a tactical adjustment by head coach Andy Farrell. Osborne, who has started Ireland's past seven available games, moves from full-back to left wing, the number 11 shirt vacated by James Lowe's departure from Irish rugby and complicated by Tommy O'Brien's injury. Hugo Keenan returns at full-back after injury, with the midfield pairing of Stuart McCloskey and Garry Ringrose maintained. Sam Prendergast has been selected at out-half following Jack Crowley's injury.

Osborne has performed prominently at full-back during this year's Six Nations, scoring four tries across five matches whilst covering for the injured Keenan. His club work with Leinster this season has primarily been at centre. Other candidates for the left wing position included Jacob Stockdale, who has spent much of his career there, alongside Jimmy O'Brien and Zac Ward. Farrell's coaching staff identified Osborne as defensively solid with a strong left boot and proven try-scoring ability at Test level. The selection creates a Leinster-dominated backline, with Prendergast joining Osborne in the squad.

Prendergast, 23, takes the out-half role after playing a key role in Leinster's URC final victory over the Bulls. He has experienced difficult Test outings in his first two years at international level, particularly against France and South Africa in defensive situations. Farrell has also included Cian Prendergast, Sam's older brother, in the pack. Saturday's fixture precedes Ireland's subsequent Test at New Zealand's Eden Park later this month.
