GOVERNMENT REJECTS PUB OPENING HOURS EXTENSION FOR 1AM ENGLAND MATCH

The government has declined to extend pub opening hours on Sunday night to accommodate the England versus Mexico World Cup fixture, which begins at 1am UK time in Mexico City. Liberal Democrat MP Max Wilkinson raised the matter in the House of Commons, requesting a blanket extension to licensing laws so supporters could watch the match in pubs. Business Minister Kate Dearden confirmed the government would not extend hours further for the 1am kick-off, though pubs retain existing flexibility for earlier matches.

The government relaxed licensing rules in April to allow extended opening hours for football matches. Under those rules, pubs can remain open until 1am for games with kick-offs between 5pm and 9pm, and until 2am for matches starting after 9pm. Pubs may also apply to their local council for a Temporary Event Notice to stay open late, though applications must be submitted at least five working days beforehand. This deadline has now passed for Sunday's match, making it too late for most establishments to apply. Some pubs that planned for England's potential tournament progression had already secured event notices.

Emma McClarkin, chief executive of the British Beer and Pub Association, stated the organisation remained in contact with government regarding publicans' concerns. McClarkin said it would be regrettable if local pubs were unable to show the match, citing the importance of the fixture to supporters and the hospitality sector.
