WEBB TELESCOPE DETECTS BLACK HOLE PREDATING ITS HOST GALAXY

FRI 05 JUN 2026 SPACE

The James Webb Space Telescope has identified a supermassive black hole that formed before the galaxy surrounding it. Scientists confirmed the black hole is older than its host galaxy, reversing the previously assumed relationship between these structures. Separately, researchers have resolved a long-standing mystery concerning the black hole at the centre of the Milky Way. Both findings represent significant advances in the understanding of black hole formation and behaviour.

The Webb discovery challenges the established model in which galaxies and their central black holes grow together over time. Data from the telescope shows the black hole predates the galaxy that now contains it, indicating black holes can form independently of galactic structure. The Milky Way finding addresses questions that scientists have pursued for decades regarding the behaviour of Sagittarius A*, the black hole at our galaxy's centre. Researchers used observational data to reach conclusions that had previously eluded the scientific community.

Together, the two findings shift the scientific understanding of how black holes and galaxies co-evolve across cosmic time. The Webb telescope result raises new questions about the conditions in the early universe that allowed black holes to form ahead of their surrounding galaxies. The resolution of the Milky Way mystery provides a cleaner baseline for studying black hole activity closer to home. Both results are expected to inform future research directions in observational astronomy and theoretical astrophysics.
