VON DER LEYEN VISITS BAKU FOR EU-AZERBAIJAN TALKS
Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, has begun a South Caucasus tour in Baku with talks held with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. The visit forms part of increased EU engagement on regional stability, energy and connectivity in the South Caucasus. Von der Leyen described Baku as a remarkable city where ancient heritage meets modern development. The discussions represent a continuation of diplomatic efforts by the EU in the region.
The European Commission stated that von der Leyen expressed satisfaction at returning to Baku. The visit signals the EU's intention to deepen relations with Azerbaijan on multiple fronts. Energy security and infrastructure connectivity have been identified as key areas of focus for the EU in the South Caucasus region. The timing of the visit reflects broader EU strategy to strengthen ties with nations outside its immediate borders.
The South Caucasus region remains a priority for EU foreign policy engagement. Von der Leyen's tour in the region is expected to encompass further bilateral meetings beyond Azerbaijan.
