SCOTLAND IMPLEMENTS GLUE TRAP BAN WITH FINES UP TO £40,000

WED 01 JUL 2026

Scotland's ban on glue traps came into full force, introducing maximum fines of £40,000 for those found using the devices. Animal rights campaigners welcomed the enforcement of the legislation, describing glue traps as inhumane. The ban prohibits the use of these adhesive traps, which are designed to catch rodents and other small animals.

Glue traps work by immobilising animals on a sticky surface, preventing them from escaping. Animal welfare organisations have long opposed their use, citing the suffering they inflict on trapped creatures. The Scottish Government moved to outlaw the devices following pressure from campaigners who documented cases of animals caught on the traps.

The introduction of the ban with associated penalties represents a significant shift in Scottish animal welfare policy. Enforcement of the legislation now falls to local authorities and relevant regulatory bodies. The move makes Scotland one of the jurisdictions with the strictest penalties for use of the devices, according to animal rights groups that backed the legislative change.
