E JEAN CARROLL ASKS JUDGE TO ENFORCE $5.8M TRUMP DAMAGES AWARD

WED 01 JUL 2026 INTERNATIONAL

Writer E Jean Carroll has requested that a judge order Donald Trump to pay £3.7 million in damages awarded by a New York jury in May 2023. The jury found Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation in a civil case relating to Carroll's allegation that he sexually assaulted her in the 1990s and subsequently denied the incident on social media. Trump denied the allegations throughout the case. The request follows the US Supreme Court's decision to decline Trump's appeal to review the case.

Carroll's legal team stated that the damages now total approximately $5.8 million when interest is included. The lawyers said Carroll had previously agreed to all of Trump's requests to delay payment, but that cooperation would now end. Trump's representatives have previously argued that Judge Lewis Kaplan, who oversaw the civil trial, improperly allowed evidence to be presented that affected the jury's perception of Trump. A federal appeals court upheld the jury's verdict last year and determined that Kaplan had not made errors warranting a new trial. Trump has claimed the case is "fake" and repeated this assertion on social media following the Supreme Court's decision.

Carroll, a former magazine columnist, is now 82 years old. She accused Trump of attacking her in a Bergdorf Goodman department store dressing room in Manhattan in the mid-1990s. She later alleged he defamed her through a post on Truth Social in 2022. The BBC contacted Trump's attorneys for comment.
