CHELSEA SIGN ATALANTA RIGHT-BACK PALESTRA FOR £47M
Chelsea have completed the acquisition of right-back Marco Palestra from Atalanta for approximately £47m including add-ons. The 21-year-old has agreed a six-year contract with an option for a further year. Palestra becomes the first signing under newly appointed manager Xabi Alonso. The transfer saw Chelsea outbid Inter Milan, who had reached an agreement with the player valued at £43m, with Chelsea offering improved wage terms according to sources in Italy.
Palestra spent the previous season on loan at Cagliari, where he was named Serie A's defender of the year. He made his senior debut for Atalanta in the Europa League in December 2023 and earned selection for Italy during World Cup qualifying play-offs. In a statement, Palestra cited Chelsea's status as "one of the best clubs in the world" and expressed enthusiasm about Alonso's tactical vision and the club's squad quality. His appointment marks a significant acceleration in his development, having progressed from Italy's third tier with Atalanta's under-23 side within three years.
Chelsea are pursuing further defensive recruitment, with Crystal Palace's Maxence Lacroix identified as a primary centre-back target and Rayo Vallecano's Pep Chavarria also under discussion. The club rejected an £8m bid for Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka, who previously worked under Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen. Agreed deals are in place for striker Emmanuel Emegha from Strasbourg and winger Geovany Quenda from Sporting, with Valentin Barco expected to complete a move from Strasbourg. Chelsea finished tenth in the Premier League last season and failed to qualify for European competition, influencing their approach to future transfers and player sales.
