ENGLAND PUBS EXPECT £20M BOOST FROM DR CONGO KNOCKOUT FIXTURE
British pubs anticipate selling an estimated four million additional pints on Wednesday during England's knockout match against DR Congo, according to projections from the British Beer and Pub Association. The fixture is expected to inject approximately £20 million into the hospitality sector. Andy Tighe, chief strategy officer at the British Beer and Pub Association, stated the match represents "a welcome boost to trade" at a time when pub margins have been significantly reduced. He noted that interest levels typically increase as tournaments progress.
The 5pm kick-off time for the Atlanta fixture marks a departure from earlier tournament matches, which were scheduled at 9pm or 10pm BST. This earlier timing is predicted to generate higher staff absences on Wednesday and Thursday, according to Alan Price, chief executive of BrightHR. BrightHR, which provides HR software to 68,000 small businesses across the UK, has already recorded a 5 per cent increase in employees booking time off through its systems. Some employers have responded by introducing flexible working arrangements, permitting staff to arrive earlier to leave sooner, or installing televisions in workplaces.
Mr Price anticipates further increases in workers reporting sick during the match period, despite flexible arrangements being offered by certain businesses. Some employers have opted to close early entirely. The combination of fixture scheduling and workplace flexibility measures reflects efforts by the hospitality and business sectors to manage the event whilst maintaining operations.
