BIODIVERSITY NET GAIN MARKET VALUE APPROACHES £100M

WED 01 JUL 2026

The value of registered biodiversity net gain allocations and transaction activity is set to reach £93m in the current year, according to new data. This figure represents nearly triple the £33m recorded in 2025. The market for biodiversity net gain, a mechanism requiring developers to leave habitats in a better state than before development, continues to expand.

Biodiversity net gain became mandatory for most developments in England from November 2023. The scheme allows developers to meet their obligations through on-site improvements, off-site habitat creation, or purchasing credits from a registered market. The registered allocations tracked in the data reflect transactions within this formal framework.

The approaching £100m threshold marks significant growth in a market that has operated for little over a year. Industry participants and environmental organisations have pointed to the scheme as a mechanism to embed conservation into development planning. The continued expansion of transaction values suggests increasing engagement from both developers seeking to meet their obligations and habitat providers offering credits.
