TILES TYCOON LOSES £850K COURT FIGHT OVER GRANDSON GIFTS
Robert Stokes, a 90-year-old businessman and fourth-generation owner of Stokes Tiles in Sheffield, lost a High Court case in Leeds in March after suing his grandson Sebastian to recover approximately £850,000. Mr Stokes had provided over £720,000 towards Sebastian's £1 million home purchase and tens of thousands of pounds more, including over £10,000 for flowers at his wedding at Grantley Hall in North Yorkshire. Judge Richard Carter dismissed Mr Stokes's claim, finding the payments constituted gifts rather than loans as the businessman had argued.
Mr Stokes had described Sebastian as his "favourite" grandson and had intended to groom him to take over the family business, which has operated since 1895. Sebastian had previously worked in banking before joining the family firm. The two had maintained a harmonious relationship until the family rift that prompted the legal dispute. Mr Stokes demanded his grandson sell the refurbished house to repay what he claimed were loans, whilst Sebastian's legal representatives argued the money had been given as gifts and attributed the dispute partly to jealousy from other family members.
Judge Carter stated it was "quite possible" that Mr Stokes had later "revisited his previous indulgence of Sebastian" and attempted to recover the funds. Stokes Tiles operates from a 100,000 square foot warehouse in the Rother Valley near Sheffield and supplies tiles globally. The court found that Mr Stokes, despite being guest of honour at the wedding, had initiated proceedings that resulted in the substantial financial loss.
