CAMERON MYERS BREAKS AUSTRALIAN 1500M RECORD IN PARIS
Cameron Myers set a new Australian 1500m record on Sunday night in Paris, recording a time of 3:28.00. The time ranks as the fastest in the world this year and the fastest ever recorded by a runner under 21 years old. Myers finished first in the race, ahead of French runner Azeddine Habz and British 2022 world champion Jake Wightman. The 20-year-old from Canberra now sits 12th on the all-time list for the 1500m distance, two seconds behind the world record.
Myers stated that achieving the Australian record had been a personal goal he wanted to accomplish. He described the pressure of targeting a specific time as potentially distracting from the primary objective of winning the race itself. The record previously belonged to fellow Australian Olli Hoare, whose mark Myers surpassed. Myers said the achievement would prove significant for his future performances.
Myers' next competition is the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, where he will contest the mile – a distance returning to the Games for the first time in 60 years. He will face Hoare again at that event, alongside British runners Jake Wightman and Josh Kerr, the 2023 world champion and 2024 Olympic silver medallist at 1500m. Myers has indicated his ambition to win in Glasgow and to push his competitors to perform at their highest level. The runner has been identified as a potential medal contender for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
