US LIFTS EXPORT CONTROLS ON ANTHROPIC'S CLAUDE AI TOOLS
The United States Department of Commerce has lifted export controls on Anthropic's two most advanced artificial intelligence models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5, the company announced. Anthropic said it would begin restoring access to both tools on Wednesday following notification of the decision. The models had been subject to export restrictions since 12 June, when the US government ordered their suspension worldwide over national security concerns.
Fable 5 is designed for consumer use and capable of deep reasoning and independent task completion. Mythos 5 is built for business applications and cybersecurity specialists, with stated ability to identify and exploit vulnerabilities in computer code. The US government had cited concerns that the tools could be exploited by hackers to identify weaknesses in computer systems. Anthropic previously stated that authorities had not specified particular technical concerns about its technology at the time of the suspension order.
Anthropic disagreed with the restriction, stating at the time that the government's understanding involved discovery of a potential method to bypass safety restrictions on Fable 5, known as "jailbreaking". The company argued that identification of a single narrow potential jailbreak did not justify recalling a commercial model deployed to hundreds of millions of users. The BBC has sought comment from the Department of Commerce regarding the decision to lift the export controls.
