MAJOR RETAILERS ADVERTISED E-SCOOTERS FOR ROAD USE DESPITE UK BAN

WED 01 JUL 2026

An investigation by the Press Association found that major retailers including Amazon, Argos and Currys advertised e-scooters for use on public roads and paths, contrary to UK law. The investigation identified marketing pitches promoting e-scooters for commuting and urban riding. All three retailers amended their advertising after being contacted by the Press Association. Each company stated that guidance on their websites instructed customers to follow local laws.

Under UK law, only rented e-scooters may legally be ridden on roads, cycle paths and in parks. Privately-owned e-scooters can be used only on private land with the owner's permission. Amazon stated that its guidelines prohibited images of riders on roads or pavements, and that product listings must state e-scooters are banned from public use in the UK. Currys said it was reviewing its website to ensure no product listings suggested e-scooters could be used on public roads or spaces. In 2025, the Advertising Standards Authority banned an e-scooter advert, ruling that it omitted significant information about legal restrictions.

The Press Association reported that smaller retailers continued to promote e-scooters for commuting and city riding on their websites. The ASA advises advertisers to include prominent statements explaining the law, but states this alone is insufficient if advertisements also suggest e-scooters can be used anywhere. Major outlets made changes following the investigation's findings. Smaller sellers appear not yet to have adjusted their promotional materials.
