ARTHUR FERY BEATS DAMIR DZUMHUR AT WIMBLEDON AMID LET CALL ROW
Arthur Fery defeated Damir Dzumhur 3-6 6-2 6-2 6-1 at Wimbledon after a disputed let call in the second set. The incident occurred in the fourth game when Dzumhur believed his serve had caught the net tape at 15-30, but umpire Greg Allensworth did not award a let. Dzumhur subsequently questioned Fery's honesty during the match, asking the British player to "look into" his eyes and "be honest" about whether he had stopped playing. Fery said he did not halt during the point and continued without interruption.
Fery, ranked 114th in the world and playing as a wildcard, recovered from losing the first set and falling 2-0 down in the second. The 23-year-old claimed the confrontation with Dzumhur actually benefited his performance, stating it "got the spark ignited" in him and helped overcome his sluggish early play. Dzumhur won only three of the 19 games played after the disputed call, with his momentum visibly disrupted. Fery used earplugs during subsequent changeovers as Dzumhur continued to remonstrate with the umpire.
Fery becomes the first British man to reach the Wimbledon second round and will face Finnish qualifier Otto Virtanen next. The players exchanged a terse handshake and exchanged words following the match conclusion. Fery downplayed the incident afterwards, stating he believes Dzumhur creates controversy "with everyone". Dzumhur said afterwards: "I wouldn't be able to play knowing that I did something that maybe is not true."
