BARCLAYS SECURES 999-YEAR LEASE ON CANARY WHARF HEADQUARTERS FOR £750M

TUE 30 JUN 2026 MARKETS

Barclays has acquired a long-term leasehold interest in its global headquarters at One Churchill Place, Canary Wharf, in a transaction valued at £750m. The FTSE 100 bank entered the agreement with Canary Wharf Group, securing the right to occupy the 1m square foot tower for up to 999 years. The deal replaces Barclays' existing lease, which had been due to expire in 2039, a deadline the bank had extended only two years prior.

Barclays group chief executive C.S. Venkatakrishnan stated the acquisition would provide "long-term certainty" and "greater flexibility" over the bank's London footprint as working patterns evolve. The bank has occupied One Churchill Place since 2005. Canary Wharf Group chief executive Shobi Khan described the transaction as a "strong endorsement" of the district. The deal ranks among Europe's largest office transactions in recent years, occurring when prime London office space remains in limited supply.

The agreement signals wider confidence in Canary Wharf's recovery following years of uncertainty about the district's future. Payments firm Visa has announced plans to relocate its European headquarters to the estate, occupying 300,000 square feet at One Canada Square on a 15-year lease. Fintech challenger Zopa Bank has committed to doubling its office presence at 20 Water Street with a new 44,000 square foot headquarters to accommodate 900 staff members.
