NAGELSMANN REFUSES TO RESIGN AFTER GERMANY LOSES TO PARAGUAY
Julian Nagelsmann stated he will not resign as Germany head coach following the nation's elimination from the World Cup at the last 32 stage. Germany lost to Paraguay in a penalty shootout in Boston. Nagelsmann said he had already spoken to officials at the German Football Association (DFB) before his press conference, which took place almost four hours after the match. He stated the DFB had not offered him a contract extension immediately after the defeat and indicated they would discuss his future at a later time.
Germany entered the match after losing to Ecuador in their final group game and faced a Paraguay side that finished third in Group D behind the United States and Australia. Nagelsmann noted this was his second tournament in three years as Germany manager, with one knockout round victory achieved against Denmark at the home Euros. He acknowledged that public opinion in Germany would not be positive following the defeat and stated the team had not performed sufficiently to merit celebration. Nagelsmann said Germany's defensive approach by Paraguay made it difficult to create scoring opportunities.
Paraguay's president declared Tuesday a national holiday to mark the country's progression to the last 16. Paraguayan journalists celebrated in the stadium as the winning penalty was confirmed. Nagelsmann stated he possesses knowledge of football mechanics and the industry, and expressed willingness to continue if the DFB wished him to remain in the role.
