DOMESTIC KILLERS COULD FACE 25-YEAR SENTENCES UNDER NEW PLANS

MON 29 JUN 2026 CRIME

The government is proposing to increase sentences for those convicted of murdering partners or ex-partners at home. The changes would raise the starting sentence from 15 years to 25 years, bringing domestic murder cases into line with other murder convictions. The proposal aims to close what the government describes as a significant sentencing gap in current law.

Under existing sentencing guidelines, murders committed in domestic settings have carried a lower starting point than other homicides. The 15-year baseline has meant sentences for domestic killers have differed substantially from those imposed for murders in other circumstances. The proposed increase to 25 years would align these cases with the standard sentencing framework applied across other murder convictions.

The government is pursuing this change as part of efforts to address sentencing disparities within the criminal justice system. The proposals remain subject to consultation and legislative processes before any changes could be implemented. No timeline has been confirmed for when these changes might come into effect.
