DAVEIGH CHASE DIED FROM AIDS, MEDICAL EXAMINER REPORTS

MON 29 JUN 2026

Daveigh Chase, known for starring in the 2002 horror film The Ring and voicing Lilo Pelekai in the animated film Lilo & Stitch, died on 16 June at the age of 35. The L.A. County Medical Examiner listed acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) as her official cause of death, with chronic polysubstance use noted as a significant contributing factor. Her boyfriend, Roy Hernandez, had previously stated that she died from meningitis and a blood infection that caused septic complications and organ failure.

AIDS represents the most advanced stage of HIV, a virus that attacks the body's immune system. According to the World Health Organisation, HIV is highly treatable when properly managed. However, when left untreated, the virus can progress to AIDS, which poses a life-threatening risk to patients. Chronic polysubstance use refers to the repeated use of two or more drugs simultaneously.

Chase's death was announced weeks after she passed away. The revised cause of death released by the medical examiner differed from the initial account provided by her boyfriend to media outlets. The actress had appeared in television and film work spanning several decades following her early roles in major studio productions.
