TREVOR NOAH DEFENDS IRAN TEAM OVER MEDIA TREATMENT AT WORLD CUP

MON 29 JUN 2026 FOOTBALL

Iran's World Cup campaign ended with elimination on goal difference, prompting comedian Trevor Noah to question the media's approach to the team during the tournament. Noah stated on his live stream that African and Middle Eastern teams faced distinct treatment compared to other nations, with journalists pressing them on political matters rather than footballing performance. He praised Iran's players for maintaining integrity and respect throughout their participation, despite the additional scrutiny they received at press conferences.

Noah argued that footballers should not be required to answer questions about their governments' actions whilst other nations' players face no such demands. He posted on social media: "Funny how some teams get asked about football…and others get asked to explain the world." The Iranian squad trained in Tijuana and crossed the border before each match throughout the tournament, an arrangement that drew criticism from player Mehdi Taremi and coach Amir Ghalenoei. Both questioned FIFA and the host nation, the United States, over the logistical conditions imposed on their team.

Noah contended that media coverage focused on matters beyond the players' control rather than their sporting performance. He called for separation between sport and politics, stating that players should not bear responsibility for addressing international relations or government policies. His comments reflected wider responses to Iran's World Cup experience, which involved unique operational challenges that other competing nations did not encounter.
