MACRON MEETS OMANI SULTAN AS FRANCE ENGAGES ON MIDDLE EAST DE-ESCALATION
French President Emmanuel Macron met with Sultan Haitham bin Tariq of Oman as part of diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions in the Middle East. Geopolitics and energy analyst Dawud Al Ansari characterised Oman as committed to de-escalation and peace in the region. Al Ansari stated that Oman has deliberately cultivated influence through neutrality, mediation and pragmatic diplomacy rather than operating simply as another Gulf Cooperation Council monarchy. He argued that the Sultanate prioritises stability, free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and dialogue between regional adversaries.
Al Ansari placed France's recent diplomatic and economic engagement with the region within a broader strategic context. He contended that France's initiatives reflect an interest in reducing regional instability, given the consequences such instability carries for global energy markets and European economies. Al Ansari noted that Oman faces domestic pressures to diversify its economy and create opportunities for its predominantly young population, making international partnerships increasingly important. He described geopolitical leverage as non-static, arguing that Iran's ability to use the Strait of Hormuz as a strategic instrument will likely diminish over time.
Al Ansari characterised Gulf geopolitics as an evolving landscape shaped by diplomacy, economics and long-term strategic adaptation rather than a fixed balance of power. He contended that neighbouring states are investing in alternative trade routes and infrastructure that could reduce dependence on existing strategic chokepoints. Regional security remains fragile despite recent agreements, according to Al Ansari's assessment.
