LABOUR LAUNCHES PROGRAMME FOR MILLION UNEMPLOYED YOUNG PEOPLE
Labour has launched a new programme designed to address unemployment amongst young people not in education or training. The initiative targets approximately one million individuals classified as Neets, according to the government's assessment. The programme commenced today, with stated aims to provide employment support and training opportunities.
The government drew comparison to Labour's New Deal for young people, a scheme introduced in the late 1990s. That earlier programme is cited as a success by supporters of the current administration. The new scheme addresses what some characterise as a "lost generation" of young people who have faced persistent barriers to employment and education.
The programme represents a stated priority for the government's approach to youth employment policy. Labour officials have indicated that outcomes from this initiative will carry significant weight in evaluating the administration's performance on generational opportunity. Implementation of the scheme begins immediately, with delivery structures to be confirmed in subsequent announcements.
