NATIONWIDE TO CUT 600 JOBS AFTER VIRGIN MONEY TAKEOVER

MON 29 JUN 2026

Nationwide Building Society is to cut 600 jobs following its takeover of Virgin Money, the society has confirmed. The redundancies affect staff at both Nationwide and Virgin Money whose roles are set to be duplicated once the two lenders' operations are fully merged. This represents the first major round of job cuts linked to the acquisition.

Nationwide completed its purchase of Virgin Money, a high street bank, in a deal that brought the two financial institutions together. The merger process requires the consolidation of overlapping functions across both organisations. The 600 redundancies reflect roles that will no longer be required once the operational integration is completed.

No further details regarding the timeline for the job cuts or which departments will be most affected have been disclosed at this stage. Nationwide Building Society and Virgin Money staff will be informed of how the redundancies impact their roles as the merger progresses. The cuts mark a significant restructuring phase as the two lenders move towards full operational integration.
