CANADA REACHES WORLD CUP ROUND OF 16 WITH 92ND-MINUTE GOAL

MON 29 JUN 2026 FOOTBALL

Canada advanced to the round of 16 at the FIFA World Cup after Stephen Eustaquio scored in the 92nd minute against South Africa. Eustaquio chested a half-cleared cross before volleying the ball into the bottom corner to secure a 1-0 victory. The result marked Canada's first-ever win in a World Cup knockout match. Coach Jesse Marsch described his players as "Canadian heroes" following the victory.

The match was shaped by a denied penalty appeal in the 45th minute when Richie Laryea was brought down in the box following a challenge by Khuliso Mudau. Referee Joao Pinheiro waved away the appeal, and VAR did not overturn the decision after determining that Mudau had made contact with the ball first. Marsch confronted the referee at halftime rather than heading into the tunnel, though Moise Bombito redirected him toward the tunnel before he could engage further. The match remained goalless through regular time before Eustaquio's extra-time finish.

Former players Troy Deeney and Marcelo Balboa criticised Marsch's conduct toward the referee on CBS Sports Golazo. Deeney stated that when players have to calm down their manager, "that's not a good sign" and expressed concern the coach's reaction could influence how players conduct themselves. Balboa said confronting the referee would not change the outcome of any decision. The match marked a significant milestone for Canada in World Cup competition.
