SUPREME COURT BLOCKS TRUMP'S ATTEMPT TO FIRE FED GOVERNOR COOK

MON 29 JUN 2026 ECONOMY

The US Supreme Court has blocked President Donald Trump's attempt to remove Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, ruling in a 5-4 decision that the administration failed to provide her sufficient due process to contest her removal. The decision returns the matter to lower courts, where the administration must prove its allegations that Cook committed mortgage fraud if it wishes to proceed with the firing. Cook will remain as a Federal Reserve governor whilst her lawsuit challenging the removal effort continues. Cook has denied the allegations against her.

The Federal Reserve's independence from presidential control is protected by law, which permits a president to remove governors only "for cause". Trump announced his intention to remove Cook in August via social media, claiming she had filed mortgage forms indicating two different principal residences simultaneously, a practice that can secure lower interest rates on primary homes. The White House argued that this issue, whether intentional or inadvertent, constituted negligence that could undermine public confidence in the central bank. Cook's legal representatives contended that the administration's approach to the removal would render Congress's protections for the Fed meaningless.

The ruling affirms the Federal Reserve's independence from political pressure and protects its ability to set policy according to long-term economic objectives rather than short-term interests. The Supreme Court found that the administration's handling of the case, including Trump's social media announcement, did not constitute proper notice and opportunity for Cook to respond to the allegations. Lower courts will now determine whether sufficient cause exists for Cook's removal to proceed.
