CRUFTS WINNER BANNED FROM OWNING DOGS AFTER 77 FOUND IN SQUALOR

MON 29 JUN 2026 CRIME

Lynda Cooper, a former Crufts winner, has been banned from owning dogs for ten years following the discovery of 77 emaciated dogs living in squalid conditions at her home in Pontypool. Animal welfare teams responding to a suspected illegal breeding complaint in 2024 found the dogs, including 20 puppies, living in filth with many significantly underweight and suffering from ear and dental infections. Cooper pleaded guilty to 11 animal welfare offences and breeding dogs without a licence at Cardiff Crown Court on 19 June. She received a 12-month suspended sentence and was ordered to pay £10,000 in prosecution costs.

Cooper won six awards at Crufts in 2016 with her Bracco Italiano gun dog. Animal welfare inspectors first visited her property in August 2024 after Hope Rescue rehoming charity received a surrender request from Cooper, who handed over 23 dogs comprising three mothers and 20 puppies. Officers became immediately concerned by conditions witnessed during this visit and discovered additional dogs on the premises. Inspectors returned with Animal Licensing Wales and Torfaen Council's Licensing and Trading Standards teams, removing a further 54 dogs from the property.

Officers described the dogs' condition as "devastating", with dozens suffering severe malnourishment alongside ear and dental infections. Animal welfare teams stated they were "horrified" by what they found inside the home. The case was processed through Cardiff Crown Court, where the scale of the welfare breaches resulted in the decade-long ownership ban.
