BADENOCH WARNS OF SUMMER CHAOS OVER BURNHAM ECONOMIC PLANS
Kemi Badenoch has stated the United Kingdom faces a "summer of chaos" owing to what she characterises as Andy Burnham's indecision regarding his government's direction. Speaking in London, Ms Badenoch urged Mr Burnham to remove Energy Secretary Ed Miliband from his position rather than promote him to chancellor, claiming business leaders were "terrified" of him in that role. Ms Badenoch said the economy remained "in limbo" as businesses awaited Mr Burnham's decisions on key policy matters.
Ms Badenoch outlined concerns across multiple sectors, stating that businesses were worried about capital gains tax changes and that the car industry faced uncertainty over the timeline for phasing out petrol vehicles. She argued that any signal Mr Burnham intended to borrow additional money would instantly increase borrowing costs, which would be passed to households through higher mortgage payments and taxes. Ms Badenoch called for spending cuts and control of the welfare bill to address what she described as a "harsh economic reality" with the nation's finances "maxed out".
Ms Badenoch criticised Mr Burnham's devolution proposals as inadequate, arguing that creating another layer of politicians would not boost economic growth and would instead reduce parliamentary power whilst increasing government outsourcing. She stated the plan lacked substance beyond delegating decisions to mayors. According to separate reporting, Mr Burnham has stated his plan to raise living standards would take ten years to implement.
