WALSH BEATS FREESTYLE WORLD RECORD SET BY DOUGLASS

Gretchen Walsh broke the 50 metres freestyle world record, completing the distance in 23.80 seconds. The record was previously held by Kate Douglass, Walsh's training partner, who set the mark earlier this month. Walsh's time bettered Douglass's record by 0.04 seconds.

The record has now changed hands twice in nine days, with both swimmers representing significant progress in the event. Douglass had set her record as the previous benchmark for the 50m freestyle discipline. Both swimmers train together, meaning the record improvements have emerged from the same training environment.

Walsh's achievement marks the second world record set in the 50m freestyle within a short timeframe. The rapid succession of records suggests continued progression in the event among elite swimmers. Further competition in the discipline is expected to follow these recent performances.
