WARRIORS PURSUE ANTHONY DAVIS TRADE TO REUNITE WITH LEBRON JAMES

MON 29 JUN 2026 US SPORTS

The Golden State Warriors are exploring a trade for Anthony Davis of the Washington Wizards and a subsequent free-agent signing of LeBron James, according to Kevin O'Connor of Yahoo Sports. The proposed move would pair James with Stephen Curry and Draymond Green in the Bay Area. A trade for Davis would reset his contract extension eligibility, delaying his access to a four-year, $275 million extension that he is otherwise scheduled to become eligible for on 6 August.

Any trade package for Davis would likely centre on Jimmy Butler, whose expiring $57 million contract provides salary-cap flexibility for the Warriors. Butler is currently recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament. The Warriors possess two future first-round picks and four first-round swaps that could be included to sweeten the offer. Davis and Curry previously won an Olympic gold medal together in 2024, along with James, according to the source material.

The Washington Wizards have publicly stated their intention to retain Davis as their franchise centerpiece. Will Dawkins, general manager of the Wizards, said on an ESPN live draft broadcast that Davis wishes to remain with the team and that the organisation shares that desire. The Warriors' pursuit of this combination would immediately position them as championship contenders whilst offering James an opportunity to evaluate his options as the NBA's all-time leading scorer in the final phase of his career.
