US AND IRAN TRADE STRIKES AFTER SIGNING PEACE AGREEMENT

SUN 28 JUN 2026 NORTH AMERICA

Iran launched drone and missile attacks against Bahrain and Kuwait on Sunday, following new US strikes on sites in southern Iran. The attacks came days after the US and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding. Iran threatened a "complete halt" to negotiations to end the war. Donald Trump stated on social media that if talks were abandoned, the US would "militarily finish the job" and suggested that "the Islamic Republic of Iran will no longer exist".

Kuwait, which hosts a major US military base, reported that it intercepted two ballistic missiles with no reported injuries or damage. Bahrain's interior ministry said Iranian strikes damaged a residential building near the international airport and that no deaths occurred. Qatar's interior ministry reported that one Qatari national was killed and another injured by shrapnel from "military operations in the area" whilst on a boat that went missing on Saturday and was located early on Sunday. The ministry did not disclose the location of the incident or confirm whether the shrapnel was linked to the Iranian drone attacks.

The escalating strikes undermine the fragile interim peace agreement between the two countries. Officials suggested the memorandum was worded too broadly. The latest violence follows efforts to reopen the strait of Hormuz to all shipping without Iran's direct oversight. The renewed hostilities mark a significant setback to diplomatic efforts, with both nations now engaged in direct military action rather than negotiations.
