ZOE BACKSTEDT WINS BRITISH ELITE WOMEN'S ROAD RACE IN ABERYSTWYTH
Zoe Backstedt won the British elite women's road race in Aberystwyth on 28 June. The Canyon//SRAM rider finished one minute and 42 seconds ahead of Josie Knight of DAS-Hutchinson, who took second place. Millie Couzens claimed third, ahead of Pfeiffer Georgi, in the race held in Ceredigion.
Backstedt's victory came three days after she retained her British national elite women's time trial title. She became the first British woman to win both the time trial and road race titles in the same year since Alice Wood in 2019. During the race, Knight initially opened a significant lead, but Backstedt, alongside Matilda McKibben and Jo Tindley, worked to close the gap. Backstedt then attacked alone, caught Knight, and took control with 14 kilometres remaining to secure the win.
In the elite men's road race, Fred Wright won following a sprint finish. The Pinarello-Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team rider defeated Lewis Askey, with Connor Swift finishing third. Wright's victory completed a day of elite road race championships decided on the same course in Wales.
