RUSSELL WINS AUSTRIA GP TO CLAIM SECOND VICTORY OF SEASON
George Russell secured victory at the Austrian Grand Prix, holding off Max Verstappen in the closing stages to record his second win of the season. Russell, driving for Mercedes, led from the start and maintained his advantage despite sustained pressure from the Red Bull driver in the final laps. Kimi Antonelli, Russell's Mercedes team-mate, chased Verstappen throughout the race and caught the Red Bull car on the final lap, though Verstappen secured second place. The result ends Russell's 112-day wait for a victory since winning the opening race of the season in Australia.
Russell's pole position on Saturday preceded a commanding drive on race day, during which he built an early lead whilst Hamilton attempted to contain Verstappen. Hamilton stopped for fresh tyres on lap 12 following a wheel-to-wheel battle with Verstappen, a decision that effectively ended his prospects of contending for victory. Russell and Verstappen stopped for their own tyre changes within a lap of each other approximately six to seven laps after Hamilton. Antonelli initially dropped to fifth place following a multi-car scrap at the start but stayed on track until lap 24, positioning himself advantageously when a virtual safety car was triggered by Carlos Sainz's Williams stopping on the pit straight.
The result allows Russell to reclaim second place in the world championship, narrowing the gap to Antonelli to 40 points. Verstappen's second-place finish represented his best result since Red Bull introduced a major upgrade to their car for the Austrian race, their home venue. Oscar Piastri finished fourth for McLaren. Lewis Hamilton dropped to fifth after Ferrari employed a strategy that the BBC's Andrew Benson described as confusing.
