USMNT LOSES TO TURKIYE DESPITE TOPPING GROUP

SUN 28 JUN 2026 BOXING

The United States men's national football team suffered a 2-1 defeat to Turkiye in their final group-stage match, despite having already secured first place in the group before kickoff. Head coach Mauricio Pochettino made substantial changes to the starting eleven, resting several regular players who carried yellow card suspensions. Auston Trusty gave the United States an early lead, but Turkiye equalised and took a 2-1 advantage before Sebastian Berhalter restored parity in the second half. Despite creating further scoring opportunities after Christian Pulisic entered play, the United States could not find a winning goal as Turkiye's goalkeeper Uğurcan Çakır made a series of saves.

Pochettino chose to protect key players including Tyler Adams, Antonee Robinson, Chris Richards and Folarin Balogun from the starting lineup due to their accumulated cautions. Pulisic began the match on the bench whilst recovering from a calf injury. Weston McKennie remained the sole regular starter in the eleven. The defeat meant the United States did not achieve a perfect group-stage record in World Cup history.

Former USMNT defender Alexi Lalas characterised the disappointment as reflective of rising expectations around the national team rather than a significant setback. Lalas stated that the loss demonstrated higher standards now surround the squad, describing this as a positive development. He urged supporters to focus on upcoming knockout-stage matches, noting that momentum remained available to harness moving forward.
