SEVEN DEATHS IN OPEN WATER DURING UK HEATWAVE

SUN 28 JUN 2026

Seven people have died in open water during the recent heatwave, according to police reports. A 15-year-old boy was recovered from Cowbury Reservoir in Stalybridge, Tameside, following a rescue operation at 6.30pm on Saturday. In a separate incident on the same day, a 55-year-old woman died after entering a pool at Sandwell Valley Country Park in West Bromwich at 4.30pm. Greater Manchester Police Chief Inspector Helen Baxter described the incidents as "nothing short of devastating" and stated the force had found no suspicious circumstances in the boy's death.

Other recorded deaths during the period include Brody Leach, a 22-year-old whose body was recovered from the River Severn in Shrewsbury on Saturday morning after he was last seen swimming on Friday. Hayden Jones-Powell, aged 13, died after entering water at a lake in Syston, Leicestershire, at 1.30pm on Thursday. Police attributed the deaths to people entering open water to cool off during record-breaking temperatures across the UK.

Greater Manchester Police urged the public to avoid swimming in reservoirs, rivers, canals and ponds. Chief Inspector Baxter stated: "We all want to enjoy the warm weather; please make sure you do so in a safe way." The deaths occurred as unusually high temperatures continued across Britain, with members of the public seeking relief in bodies of open water.
