FEDERAL COURT REJECTS EPA BID TO ABANDON SOOT POLLUTION RULE

SAT 27 JUN 2026

A federal appeals court rejected the Environmental Protection Agency's attempt to abandon a rule setting standards for soot pollution on Friday. The three-judge panel issued a unanimous ruling against the move. The decision leaves in place a Biden-era standard that restricts particulate matter emissions from coal-fired power plants, factories and other industrial sources. The ruling represents a setback for the Trump administration's deregulatory agenda.

The EPA had sought to reverse the pollution standards established under the previous administration. Soot pollution, formally known as particulate matter, is produced by combustion processes at industrial facilities. The Biden-era rule imposed stricter limits on these emissions across multiple sectors. The appeals court's rejection means those limits remain enforceable.

The federal appeals court's decision upholds the existing environmental regulation. The ruling prevents the EPA from proceeding with its deregulation effort on this particular standard. Industrial sources subject to the rule must continue to comply with the soot pollution limits set by the Biden administration. The court's unanimous decision suggests broad judicial agreement on the validity of the existing regulation.
