IRAN MANAGER URGES FIFA TO CHALLENGE HOST RESTRICTIONS
Iran manager Amir Ghalenoei has called on FIFA president Gianni Infantino to take stronger action against restrictions imposed on the Iranian delegation at the World Cup. Ghalenoei stated that whilst Infantino had attempted to minimise problems, FIFA should prevent hosts from treating teams unfairly in future tournaments. Captain Mehdi Taremi described the World Cup as a "disaster" and criticised FIFA's response to entry denials affecting Iranian officials. Iran drew 1-1 with Egypt on Friday, finishing third in Group G, and faces potential elimination depending on results on Saturday.
Iranian players and staff have been based in Tijuana, Mexico throughout the tournament despite all matches taking place in the United States, according to reports. The delegation was unable to remain in the US amid ongoing tensions between Iran and the American government. Eleven senior Iranian officials were denied entry to the country. Taremi missed a penalty during the Egypt match after Ramin Rezaeian had equalised. In stoppage time, Iran had a goal ruled out for offside when Shoja Khalilzadeh struck, and Saeid Ezatolah struck the crossbar.
The travel and visa restrictions have been described as part of a broader pattern of complications affecting Iran's participation. Ghalenoei acknowledged Infantino's efforts to assist but stated that the host nation had not treated the Iranian team adequately. Iran remains among the eight best third-placed sides in the tournament and could yet advance or face elimination depending on Saturday's fixtures.
