THUNDERSTORMS DAMAGE SCOTTISH HOMES AND DISRUPT FLIGHTS

SAT 27 JUN 2026

Thunderstorms and lightning strikes swept across Scotland on Thursday night and into Friday, causing structural damage to residential properties and disrupting transport links. A house in Midlothian sustained severe damage when its roof caught fire during the storm in the east of the country. A camping and caravan park at Dornoch in the Highlands experienced flash flooding and large hailstones. Flights at Edinburgh Airport were disrupted by the weather conditions.

According to BBC Weather presenter Christopher Blanchett, approximately 32,000 lightning strikes occurred across Scotland within a 24-hour period. The thunderstorms followed Scotland's hottest day of the year on Thursday, when temperatures reached 31.2 degrees Celsius in Threave, Dumfries and Galloway. Several areas officially recorded a heatwave, with temperatures at or above 25 degrees Celsius for three consecutive days. Blanchett stated that prolonged June sunshine and extreme heat had created substantial atmospheric energy, which was destabilised by the arrival of a cold front.

The Met Office maintained a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms across Scotland on Friday, covering all regions except Shetland. Blanchett explained that the rapid cooling of heated air in the upper atmosphere generated large cumulonimbus clouds and heavy rainfall. Ground that remained baked solid from preceding heat prevented water from infiltrating the soil, substantially increasing immediate flood risk. A resident in Dalkeith reported being awakened by thunder and lightning at approximately 03:00, describing a sudden loss of electrical power.
